What happened to you at CYT was not okay.
Christian Youth Theater started in San Diego and for thirty years it was where church kids in the county did their first show. In 2022 six men sued it, saying three instructors abused them between 1991 and 2011 and that the people running CYT knew and kept it quiet. One of those instructors pleaded guilty in 2022. Another pleaded guilty this March, after a jury couldn't agree, and was sentenced in May. The San Diego chapters are closed. Were you a CYT kid? Did something happen that you have never quite named? Then keep reading, because this is about you.

6 questions. Your answers are private and go to one person.
This applies to you no matter what
- It was one of the two men who have already pleaded guilty, and you were never one of the named victims. Prosecutors charge what they can prove about a handful of people, which is not the same thing as a count of everyone he reached.
- It was somebody else. Three instructors are named in the civil suit, and the suit is about a program that let it happen, not one man.
- You told a director, a parent volunteer, the office, and the person kept working shows. That is the cover-up the six plaintiffs describe, and in California a cover-up in a childhood case can triple what a jury awards.
- It was the 1990s. So was some of what is already in court. California's deadline for anyone abused as a minor runs to age 40, or five years from the day you understood what it did to you.
- You're a parent, a sibling, a castmate asking on behalf of someone who can't bring themselves to. Reach out anyway; we can talk to you first.
The CYT San Diego record: the investigation, the suit, the pleas, and when
We didn't write what's below. The police, the courts and San Diego's newsrooms did, and we link to every one of them. We don't add to it. CYT has not admitted anything in the civil case, and nothing here decides it.
2020
CBS8 reported that San Diego police were investigating abuse allegations at Christian Youth Theater. The organization's president acknowledged the investigation and chapters closed for a time. CBS8.
April 1, 2022
Six men sued CYT. They describe abuse by three instructors between 1991 and 2011, and say the people running the program knew and concealed it. Two former employees had by then been criminally charged. 10News.
2022 and March 2026
Two former staffers pleaded guilty. Brad Christian Davis in 2022, two years' probation. David Hott, 39, this March, to two counts of lewd acts on a 13-year-old in 2007, after a first jury had split ten to two. Hoodline.
May 20, 2026
Hott was sentenced to three years' probation and lifetime registration. The civil case against CYT was still pending. The San Diego chapters were closed indefinitely. 10News.

Who can be held responsible in a CYT San Diego lawsuit
The organization. The men who did it have answered, or are answering, in criminal court, and probation is what they got. The civil case is about something else: a nonprofit that put adults alone with children for thirty years, was told, and kept the shows going. That is what the six plaintiffs allege, and under California law an organization that covered up abuse of a child can be made to pay three times the damages.
Who actually writes the check is a fair question about a nonprofit, and a lawyer will walk you through it: the San Diego organization's insurance, and whether the national CYT network it grew out of belongs in the case.
Your deadline: the California statute of limitations for childhood sexual abuse in a youth program
Until you turn 40, or five years from the day you understood what it did to you, whichever is later. That is Code of Civil Procedure 340.1, and it is why we ask your birth year. Born in 1987 or later and the door is open on age alone. Born earlier, it turns on discovery, which is a conversation, not a date, and for anything after the start of 2024 the legislature removed the deadline altogether.
The men suing right now include people from the 1990s. If that is your decade, one call settles whether it is still yours to bring.
Your situation still qualifies even if
- You never told a soul. It was a church program and everyone loved him.
- You were a teenager and it felt like a relationship. That is what grooming is built to feel like.
- You're a man and you figure this page isn't for you. The six plaintiffs are men.
- You went on to do theater, or you quit forever. Either one is a normal thing to have happened.
- You live somewhere else now. Most people do, by the time they're ready.
Programs covered

Questions people are asking
Can I sue Christian Youth Theater?
Six men already have, and two former staffers have pleaded guilty since. Whether you can depends mostly on when you were born and when it happened, which is what the questions above sort out.
What kind of lawyer do I need?
A civil lawyer who sues youth organizations for institutional sexual abuse, not only the person who did it. That is the only kind we work with, and the firm we work with takes California cases wherever you live now.
CYT is closed in San Diego. Is there anything left to sue?
Closing a chapter doesn't close a case. The nonprofit, its insurers and possibly the national organization are what a lawyer looks at, and that is a question for the call, not a reason to skip it.
The person who hurt me only got probation. Is that all there is?
Criminal court decides punishment. Civil court decides what an organization owes the people it failed, and those are different questions with different answers. The verdicts against youth programs in California in the last few years say so.
How much does a sexual abuse lawyer cost?
Here, nothing. Every case is on contingency. The lawyer is paid only out of what is recovered, and if nothing is recovered you owe nothing. Not for the call, not for the review, not for the case.
Who sees your form

Kerim Eravci · Survivor Advocate · Not a lawyer
I was a victim, and I waited. Not because I didn't know what happened to me (I knew every day), but because I'd decided it was over, mine to carry, nobody's business. When I finally went looking for a lawyer, the answer came back in two words I'd never thought about: statute of limitations. My time had run out while I was busy getting through it.
What that has cost me since is a long story, and I'll tell you the whole thing in private, if you want it. The short version is the reason my name is on this page: I'm here to help people do what I wish I'd done, which is find out where you stand while the door's still open.
I'm not a lawyer. I read what you send, I call you once, on your terms, and nothing gets filed unless you say so. Ask sooner than I did.
Kerim Eravci is not an attorney. He's a survivor.
What happens next. Three steps, nothing more until you say so.
- You answer 6 questions. Nothing is filed. Nothing starts.
- A survivor calls you, once. Not a robot, not a call center. Someone who has been where you are.
- You decide. You find out your options. If you want to stop there, you stop there.
