What happened to you at Canyon Ridge was not okay, whoever it was.

Canyon Ridge is the psychiatric hospital on G Street in Chino, 157 beds, one of the Universal Health Services hospitals that dot the state. A San Diego woman went in there in 2021 with postpartum depression. The hospital's own chart flagged her as at risk of sexual assault, and then, she says, a male patient got to her twice anyway, and she sued. Four years later a new case, filed under a John Roe name, showed up on the San Bernardino docket against UHS. If you were a patient there, this is about you.

This applies to you no matter what

• It was another patient. That is the case already on the record: a hospital that wrote sexual-assault risk on a woman's chart and then left her where a man could reach her. Supervision is the hospital's job.
• It was a staff member. A Canyon Ridge orderly was prosecuted years ago for what he did to a sedated patient, according to the firms that track this hospital. Staff cases are the oldest pattern in this building.
• You were an adult and you assume the deadline passed. For anything since 2009 there is a revival window that closes at the end of 2026, and a separate window through the end of 2027 where a private hospital covered up an assault. Canyon Ridge is private.
• You were a teenager. Then the deadline runs to age 40, or five years from the day you understood what it did to you.
• You were there in 2024 or later, at any age under 18. For that there is no deadline at all.
• You're a parent, a partner, a friend asking for someone who can't. Reach out anyway.

Who can be held responsible in a Canyon Ridge Hospital lawsuit

The hospital, and the company that owns it. Canyon Ridge belongs to Universal Health Services, and the complaint against UHS hospitals, in California and out of it, tends to read the same way: a patient is hurt, the hospital knew the risk, nothing was done. A staff member who hurts a patient answers for himself; a hospital that put a flagged patient within reach of harm answers for what it built. UHS is the deep defendant, and a jury in Illinois made it pay $535 million in 2024 over a child's assault at one of its hospitals.

A staff member who did it, if that is your story, is a defendant too. And in California, where a cover-up is proven in a childhood case, a jury can award three times the damages.
